The McLaren four – a brief history of Mclaren road cars and the Abrites diagnostics for Mclaren
-
The McLaren 4
1988, Milan Airport.
Creighton Brown- director of McLaren Racing; Ron Dennis- McLaren Team manager; Mansour Ojjeh – financial benefactor of McLaren and at the center of it all – Gordon Murray, a man who needs no introduction – the driving force behind the project. Unknowingly these four men would change the course of history – together they decided to create a vehicle unbound by any limitations – the McLaren F1.
Today, 37 years later the F1 is still the benchmark and the stencil, on which the hypercar is still made. In case you want to learn the whole intricate and classic 80s/ 90s story you can watch the following video by “THE SQUIDD” on YouTube

A Printer Name
22 years after the inception of the F1 Top Gear was part of most of our Sunday evenings, it was during one of the “news” sections of Clarkson, Hammond, and May poking fun of cars when I heard about the car named after a printer – the McLaren MP4-12C was announced. McLaren were back at making road cars. Later McLaren came to their senses and dropped the “MP4-“ part of the name and left it with just 12C, this was the return of the McLaren Road cars. At that time there was already a falling out between the McLaren 4 and the team was completely different now, but the original mantra of building brilliant cars stayed. The 12C was not the spiritual heir to the F1’s throne. It was an entry level sports car aimed to compete with the F430 and 458 Italia from Maranello.

The big boy
2013 came and McLaren Road cars were finding their direction. It was time for a halo car. They couldn’t just name it the F2, or something else, they had to call it something bombastic. Then came the name “P1”, coming from Position 1 making the bold claim that the P1 was second to none. It was designed to be among the first hybrid Hypercars part of what is now known as the “Holy Trinity” with the 918 and LaFerrari. P1 is definitely up there with the greatest cars ever produced. Was it an F1?
